Maria Hegar, MD

Maria Veronica Gonzalez Hegar, MD, FACS, CPE is a native Texan with over 20 years of experience in general surgery and trauma. During her previous tenure at Methodist Health System, she held many leadership roles including Trauma Medical Director, President-Elect of Medical Staff, Surgery Department Chair, and Facility Medical Director in Acute Care.

As a lifelong learner, she opted to return to education and completed her critical care fellowship in 2025. She now enjoys caring for surgical critical care patients while continuing to provide expert acute general surgery and trauma care. She is board-certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care.

She has extensive leadership training and strongly believes leadership is service, using her skills to serve her patients, peers, and students with honesty and respect. When Dr. Hegar is not operating or in the ICU, she enjoys international travel, including mission work, and spending time outdoors with her family and friends.
